STAR OF THE SHOW
By Mark Staniforth, PA Sport
Bending the scales at over 19 stone, Star Tauasi makes an unlikely David.
But the man from the tiny south Pacific coral island of Niue has already slain the best super-heavyweight that the 19million-strong Goliath of Australia could muster - and now he has the host nation's representative in his sights.
Tauasi's dramatic knockout of David Turner on Friday night tore his 1,800 compatriots back home away from their dartboards and focused their minds firmly on glory at their first ever Commonwealth Games.
Until this week, sporting minds in Niue were more likely to be set on their national sports, which include darts, bodybuilding and kilikiki - a form of cricket.
Now they can't stop talking about the Wythenshawe Forum's unlikeliest star - who meets England's super-heavy hope David Dolan in the second round.
"I spoke to my fiance back home after I won and the whole island seems pretty ecstatic about it," Tauasi said.
"It's a great thing for us because it's the first time we've ever participated in a major Games and we felt that just being here was a victory in itself."
Tauasi was born and brought up in the island's capital Alofi and began boxing when he got injured training to take up a professional rugby league contract in Australia.
His twist of fate has not only turned him into a famous name back home. During the course of three days' sightseeing since his victory, Tauasi has discovered the extent of his new-found celebrity.
"Since I won there's been lots of interest from the media and from people in the street who are coming up and congratulating me and shaking my hand.
"But my feet are firmly on the ground and I am not getting carried away. I have come here to do well and I am looking forward to a great fight and a great atmosphere on Tuesday."
