EAST GRABS SHOCK GOLD
By Ian Gordon, PA Sport
Portsmouth's Michael East stormed to a stunning victory in the Commonwealth
Games 1500m to complete a golden quartet for England in Manchester.
The 24-year-old beat Kenya's hot-favourite Williams Chirchir with a storming
sprint down the home straight.
East won in three minutes 37.35 seconds from Chirchir (3:37.70) with
Australia's Abdi Youcef third in 3:37.77.
England team-mate Anthony Whiteman who had bravely made a bid for victory from
200 metres out was overhauled in the home straight to finish fourth in a
season's best 3:38.04.
Í
East's victory on an incredible final night of athletics in the 38,000 stadium
took England's gold medal tally to 10 - equalling their haul in Malaysia four
years ago.
The Reading-born runner joined golden girls Kelly Holmes in the 1500m, triple
jumper Ashia Hansen and the men's 4x100m relay.
East admitted his victory had taken him by surprise.
"The last couple of races have been mediocre so to come here and not only
just get a medal but win the thing!" he said.
"I just managed to sneak it in the end. Obviously I am ecstatic. I knew
coming off the bend I had got a medal."
