Donativum gets the better of Westphalia.

John Gosden's Donativum came with a late surge to nail Aidan O'Brien's Westphalia by half a length in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf in a European one-two.

Murtagh appeared to have given the Champagne Stakes winner a beautiful ride as Westphalia hit the front, taking over from Coronet Of A Baron well inside the final furlong.

However, Frankie Dettori kept his nerve and followed Johnny Murtagh through as the Princess Haya of Jordan-owned gelding quickened impressively.

Donativum had beaten subsequent Racing Post Trophy winner Crowded House in a sales race at Newmarket on his last start.

Dettori said: "I thought if he (Murtagh on Westphalia) is going to get through I might not. I angled out and the rest is history. He picked up really well.

"When I looked up I thought it was going to be pretty tight. I was looking for room at the quarter pole and I got it."

Gosden added: "It's great to come back to Santa Anita and win a race on the main card on Saturday. It's wonderful. I thought it was a great race.

"They pulled it out well. I think we'd have been a bit unlucky if we'd have got beat. We got a bit shuffled and bumped, but that's racing."

The luckless Murtagh said: "I thought I had it won. When he kicked on he found a nice gap and quickened but the other one got me in the last few strides.

"He's run a great race."
