Nadal remembers the '98 clash all too well (Allsport)
NADAL AIMS TO AVOID REPEATING HISTORY
By PA Sport Staff
Spain take on Paraguay in Group B on Friday aiming to avoid a repeat of their
last World Cup meeting four years ago.
The Spanish were held 0-0 by Paraguay in the group stage of France 98, when it
was the South Americans who advanced to the second round.
Although Spain then beat Bulgaria 6-1 in their final game, Paraguay's victory
over Nigeria spelt the end for Javier Clemente's side.
This time is different, insists veteran defender Nadal, a member of the Spain
squad four years ago.
"We had a lot more of the ball in that match but we drew in the end and could
not qualify," he said.
"It's very different now but the main thing is we have got three points and
we have this advantage, and they are the ones who have to win."
Spain opened their Group B campaign with a 3-1 defeat of Slovenia on Sunday,
while Paraguay threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with South Africa.
Nadal said the Spanish were determined to secure their place in the next round
as quickly as possible: "It's better to get the win in the second game and not
in the third."
Nadal and Real Madrid captain Fernando Hierro form this World Cup's oldest
central defensive duo - with a combined age of 69.
The former Barcelona defender admitted the pacy Bayern Munich striker Roque
Santa Cruz - scorer of Paraguay's first goal against South Africa - could prove
a handful.
"He's one we have to watch because of his speed," he said.
If Santa Cruz is the most obvious goal threat, another player who fancies his
chances of finding the net against Spain is goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert.
The 36-year-old has eight international goals to his name already but has
promised to add to his tally in Jeonju.
"I'm going to score two, not just one - one a penalty and the other a
free-kick."
Chilavert has done his best to wind the Spanish up in the build-up to this
match, saying they were nothing special as "they only qualified by beating the
likes of Israel and Liechtenstein."
Chilavert might be better off focusing on stopping goals. Raul and Juan Carlos
Valeron warmed up for this match with goals against Slovenia while Diego Tristan
is desperate to improve on his display in that opening game.
The Deportivo La Coruna forward - who has recovered from a slight knock to his
right ankle - admitted his performance on Sunday was "not on the same level as
Raul and Valeron".
It is still possible Camacho could call on Real Madrid's Fernando Morientes in
Tristan's place, while Ivan Helguera, who voiced his disappointment at not
starting on Sunday, is competing with Nadal for a place alongside Hierro.
Valencia midfielder David Albelda is also available to Camacho after
recovering from a groin injury while full-back Juanfran is fit after his
withdrawal against Slovenia with an ankle knock.
