Paraguay continued their recent upsurge in form by beating Japanese club team Urawa Red Diamonds 2-0 in a World Cup warm-up match on Sunday.

Until last Friday, the Cesare Maldini-coached team had not won for eight months - but they have now won three in a row and were impressive against the J-League team.

"We're in great condition. We've done a very good job here," said captain and goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert.

Both of Paraguay's goals came from midfielders, the first from Guido Alvarenga in the 28th minute with Diego Gavilan grabbing the second in the 52nd minute.

Chilavert will miss Paraguay's opening match against South Africa through suspension, but he believes the team have the ability to qualify from group play and do well in the knock-out matches.

"I'm really sorry about that, because winning the first match is very important in a tournament like this one," he said. "We want to qualify to the second round, and then reach the final match.

"And personally, I want to score a couple of free-kick goals."

The eccentric Strasbourg goalkeeper already has eight international goals to his name.

He picked up his suspension for spitting on Brazilian defender Roberto Carlos after a qualifying match.

Paraguay's first match against South Africa is in Busan on June 2, and they also face Spain and Slovenia in Group B.
