- The top club will be promoted, subject to meeting the Scottish Premier League's criteria.
- The teams finishing second and third will enter a round robin contest with the Premier League's bottom club, subject to them meeting the Socttish Premier League's criteria.
- The top two clubs in the round robin will play in the Scottish Premier in the 2000-2001 season, with the club finishing last taking its place in Scottish Division One.
- Should any team finishing in the top three not meet the Premier League's criteria for promotion, it will not be promoted.
- In this event, there will be no round robin contest and the two teams finishing highest in the division who do meet the criteria will be promoted.
- The bottom club will be relegated.
- Teams finishing level on points are separated by goal difference.
- If goal difference is identical then the team scoring most goals finishes higher.
- In the event of goal difference and goals scored being identical, a play-off may be held if necessary.
