- Teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw.
- The bottom club will enter a round robin contest with the teams finishing second and third in Scottish Division One.
- The top two clubs in the round robin will play in the Scottish Premier in the 2000-2001 season, with the club finishing last taking its place in Scottish Division One.
- Should any of the top three teams in Division One not meet the Premier League's criteria for promotion then there will be a round robin contest and the team finishing bottom will remain in the Premier League.
- Teams finishing level on points are separated by goal difference.
- If goal difference is identical then the team scoring most goals finish higher. In the event of goal difference and goals scored being identical, aplay-off may be held necessary.
