  • Smokin' Joe was best known for his long running rivalry and trilogy of fights with Muhammad Ali, with Frazier becoming the first man to beat Ali.
  • Frazier first came to the attention of the boxing world after his impressive display at the 1964 Olympics, taking home gold for the USA.
  • Having unified the heavyweight division in Ali's absence, the former champion demanded to face Frazier in what was dubbed 'The match of the century.'
  • The bout lived up to its hype, with Frazier retaining his titles as he handed Ali his first professional loss.
  • Frazier then faced George Foreman in his second title defence but was overwhelmed by the big man and lost his title.
  • The second meeting between Ali and Frazier was less memorable, as Ali went on to win in 12 rounds by a unanimous decision.
  • Frazier struck a pose as he modelled clothing in Leicester Square prior to his fight with Joe Bugner.
  • Frazier met with European Champion Bugner at Earls Court, as he attempted to bounce back from his defeat to Foreman.
  • The former world champion managed to floor Bugner in the ninth round, and went on to win the match via a points decision.
  • The Brit did however put up a good fight against Frazier, with both fighters displaying battle wounds after the bout.
  • 'The Thrilla in Manilla' saw the climax of the Ali/Frazier rivalry, Frazier lost, but his final match with Ali was viewed as one of the best fights ever.
  • The so-called golden generation are reunited; as Frazier, Foreman and Ali join each other in the ring.
  • Following his retirement Smokin' Joe went into coaching, taking under his wing his daughter Jacqui Frazier-Lyde.
  • Frazier met with Nelson Mandela in 1997 and was joined by another former champion in Michael Spinks.
