IBO light-heavyweight champion Glen Johnson thinks he will never get the
chance to face Joe Calzaghe.
Johnson is in high demand after his profile rocketed with a hat-trick of wins
in 2004 over Clinton Woods, Roy Jones Jr., and Antonio Tarver, and he is
currently preparing to defend his belt against Tarver in a re-match on June 18
in Memphis.
WBO super-middleweight champion Calzaghe withdrew from a scheduled clash with
Johnson last June because of a back injury, and it now seems the Welshman is not
a part of the 36-year-old's plans.
"I don't have much hope of fighting Calzaghe - he's wasted enough of my time
already," Johnson told PA International.
"If he thinks he's brave enough he knows I'm here and I'm ready for any
challenge. But a fight with him is not something I'm hopeful about."
Johnson, who was named 'Fighter of the Year' after his exploits in 2004, is
being linked with several big future fights against the likes of Jones Jr. and
middleweight king Bernard Hopkins, who is widely regarded as currently the
finest pound-for-pound boxer in the world.
Hopkins stopped Johnson in the 11th round of a one-sided contest in July 1997,
and Jones Jr. will be gunning for revenge after he was knocked out in the ninth
round of their meeting last September, in a fight that truly marked Johnson's
arrival at the top.
"Bernard Hopkins is someone I'd really like to face, because he is one guy
who has really beaten me in the past," he added.
"I'd like to have the opportunity to have a go at him again.
"Bernard Hopkins is one of the greats in the middleweight division, and he
has accomplished so much over the years. Nothing can take away from that.
"I think it would be a great fight between us.
"With Roy Jones Jr. he is still the biggest name in the light-heavyweight
division, and it would be good to fight him again, and see what he can do
differently against me.
"It's been hard work getting here and it will be even harder to stay there
because the fights are just going to get bigger."
