Miguel Cotto overcame a scare to stop Demarcus Corley in the fifth round of their bout on Saturday night.
Cotto, who sent his opponent to the canvas after only 30 seconds at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, was in trouble in the third round but managed to survive an onslaught from Corley which started with a right-hook.
He regained his composure and the referee stopped the fight in the fifth when Corley sank to his knees having been floored earlier in the round by a fine body shot.
Corley clearly came to fight, and had the crowd gasping in the third as a right to the jaw staggered Cotto and subsequently forced him to hold.
Yet Cotto, who improves to 23-0 (19) on the strength of this result, toughed it out and eventually closed the show in the fifth after a borderline hook sank Corley to his knees.
Despite looking as though he may beat the count, referee Enrique Quinones Falu called it off somewhat prematurely and Cotto's hand was raised.
