Bradford's Junior Witter is still desperate for a shot at Ricky Hatton this summer.
The 30-year-old switch-hitter had looked on a collision course with 'The Hitman' in 2004, but his failure to box Kelson Pinto last December (Witter pulled out injured) and his subsequent move to Hennessy Sports left the match seemingly dead in the water.
However Witter – Europe's number one ranked light-welterweight – has
offered to end another Frank Warren search for a suitable opponent for the rib-crunching Mancunian.
Witter had previously volunteered to step in and face his long-term
rival on just a few days notice back in April, but was rejected in favour
of a game but over-matched Dennis Holbaek Pedersen.
That hasn't deterred the Ingle trained trained stylist from offering his
services again.
"It seems that Frank is having problems with a Ricky Hatton show in
Manchester," said Junior.
"That's unusual isn't it?
"I see he is claiming he has been forced to move it back a week in order
to `find a challenger for Hatton who is fit and ready and will meet with
the British Boxing Board of Controls strict regulations.'
"This fight isn't being televised by Showtime so there shouldn't be a
problem, apart from Shamba Mitchell there is no credible opponent out
there for Hatton apart from me.
"Maybe Frank knows, as my trainer Brendan always says, that I would
stand Ricky Hatton on his head,” Junior continued.
"That would explain why he wants me nowhere near his big ticket seller.
"But if he has faith in his so called world champion and wants to do
what is best for the sport, he should give me a call – I will be
sensible about money."
Witter, however, has doubts that Hatton will even compete on June 12th,
adding:
"Looking at Ricky on Sky on Sunday it is evident that he has been salad
dodging.
"I am not sure he has time to get into any kind of decent shape –
another reason they might not let me at him.
"I would actually not be surprised at all if the whole event was
cancelled or if Joe Calzaghe ends up headlining by himself.
"Either that or they may opt to bring in an uncompetitive opponent for
Hatton, which would be unfair on the supporters who always fork out to
support him.
"I have heard that Antonio Mesquita is being considered, I can only hope
that is a joke."
