Olympic silver medallist Fred Evans will lead a 14-strong squad selected by GB Boxing to the World Amateur Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan next month.

Fred Evans: Will lead the Team GB squad in Kazakhstan

Evans, the only 2012 medallist still remaining on the men's squad, has reconfirmed his commitment to the amateur programme since returning from a short break after the Games.

The 22-year-old will represent Wales along with fellow Olympian and double European champion Andrew Selby.

Also included are Leeds teenager Jack Bateson and London flyweight Charlie Edwards, who will be eager to make amends after narrowly missing out on qualifying for the Games in his home city.

GB performance director Rob McCracken said: "Major tournaments at this stage in the Olympic cycle are always tough and this will be a massive test for what will be a relatively inexperienced group.

"At the same time it is also a big opportunity for the boxers to show they have what it takes to succeed at world level and establish themselves as a key member of our squad as we build towards Rio in 2016."

In addition to the 14 boxers selected by the British Amateur Boxing Association, the Welsh and Scottish associations are expected to name additional team members.

Ireland's Olympic silver medallist John Joe Nevin has been left out of their 10-man squad after indicating his intention to turn professional.

The Ireland squad does include London Olympic bronze medallists Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan at light-flyweight and flyweight respectively, plus a third London Olympian, Adam Nolan, at welterweight.

There is also a place for another Sky Sports Scholar, Jason Quigley.
