The two Liverpudlians will meet on Matchroom's Bolton Arena bill more than three years after Smith emerged as a points winner from their first contest - Dodson's last at the 167lbs limit.
Both men have previously held the belt, which is currently vacant following Kenny Anderson's decision to relinquish the title earlier this year.
Matchroom's Eddie Hearn said: "I'm delighted to add this fight to our show at Bolton Arena on June 29.
"It's a classic old-school trade fight with plenty of local pride on the line. Both fighters' careers are on the line and I'm expecting a great scrap."
The Bolton bill is topped by the lightweight contest between Gavin Rees and Anthony Crolla while Lee Selby, Brian Rose, Thomas Stalker and Dale Evans are also in action.
