With the styles gelling to make for an action-packed fight, Dickinson was made to work hard for the win by Dolan, who at 33 is now likely to call it day.
Dolan came off second best when the pair met less than three years ago over 10 rounds, and as on that occasion it was Dickinson's heavier shots that proved the difference.
The champion's best period came in the eighth round when he caught Dolan with a chopping left hand in the early seconds, the following onslaught leaving Dolan looking to hold on.
His head cleared in time to land some left hands of his own before the bell sounded but the champion was well on top thereafter and the judges scored it 118-111 (twice) and 117-112 in his favour.
Dickinson, who won the vacant strap in October, will be looking to make two more defences this year as he bids to win the Lonsdale belt for keeps.
