The unbeaten champion from Kazakhstan put Geale down in the second round with a flurry of blows.

In round three he responded to a hard right to the head from the challenger with his own punishing right to the nose, followed by a quick left that sent Geale down for a second time.

The referee called a halt to a one-sided contest with 13 seconds of the round remaining.

Golovkin took his record to 30-0, while Geale, a former IBF middleweight champion is now 30-3.

It was the champion's 17th straight knockout and 27th overall, giving him a knockout rate of 90 per cent - the highest in middleweight history.

"I don't think there's anyone at 160lbs who can go 12 rounds with Gennady," said Geale's trainer, Gary Shaw. "I think that knockout streak will go on for a long time.

Golovkin said: "The knockout is very important, not just for me, not just for my team, but for everybody. This is big drama show."

Golovkin also called for a unification bout with WBC champion Miguel Cotto.

"I want a unification fight. I want who is the best in the middleweight division," he added. "Miguel Cotto - I respect him 100 per cent."
