Amir Khan says he has been stunned by the hype in the United States over a potential fight with Floyd Mayweather.

Khan ends a 12-month absence this weekend when he moves up to welterweight to take on Luis Collazo on the undercard of Mayweather's latest fight.

The American superstar opted to face Marcos Maidana instead of Khan, but the Briton is determined to keep his hat in the ring with a winning performance in Las Vegas.

And Khan told Sky Sports News he is the Vegas fight crowd's choice to take on Mayweather.

He said: "Everywhere I've been going in Vegas people have been talking about one fight - Khan-Mayweather - even though I've got a fight in front of me.

"I can't look past Luis Collazo, but everywhere I go - different gyms, meeting different fighters - they want to see Khan-Mayweather. The hype is so big in America - I didn't think it was this big.

"Time will tell. I really believe I can steal the show with a good performance against Collazo that puts me in great position for a fight against Mayweather in the future."

Khan's first contest at 147lbs is against a man who lost a contentious decision against peak-era Ricky Hatton and recently announced his return to form by stopping Victor Ortiz.

"I could've taken an easier fight at 147lbs," said Khan, who has repeatedly spoken in recent weeks about his previous problems making the light-welterweight limit. "Collazo thinks I've picked the worst time to fight him, but I want to prove how good I am. I need a challenge."
