BARTACK - 4.45 Ripon
It's bank holiday Monday and it's raining around the country. Nothing unusual in that, but it's playing havoc with potential bets this afternoon.
Take Goldream at Warwick in the Pauline's Quirky Performing Arts Cup Conditions Stakes. Robert Cowell's sprinter is in fine form and he takes on a bunch of rivals that are way off their best at present.
On the formbook he's a fantastic bet and prices around 9/4 are huge, but there is plenty of rain forecast at the track throughout the day and that changes things.
Goldream is at his best on a fast surface and I couldn't back him on anything else even though he might get away with a bit of cut against this lot. Arnold Lane will cope with any rain better than most but he carries a penalty, while Complicate could bounce back to form as he handled soft ground well a couple of times in Australia.
There are too many ifs and buts to be confident about a bet a Warwick, though, and so it's to North Yorkshire and the Ripon Rowels Handicap we go in search of profits.
A bit of rain is forecast at Ripon too, but nowhere near as much as there is at Warwick, and it looks likely they will be racing on 'Good' ground or faster this afternoon.
That's not particularly good news for the incredible Osteopathic Remedy, who is going for a scarcely believable fifth win in this race today.
Michael Dods' stalwart bounced back to winning form at Thirsk last time when the heavens opened and though he's highly likely to run with great credit again I can't help but think he's going to struggle to confirm the Thirsk form with BARTACK.
David O'Meara's charge was beaten three and a half lengths by Osteopathic Remedy at Thirsk, but he gets a 2lb pull at the weights here and has since bolted up at Ripon in a handicap over the course and distance nine days ago.
He'll have to defy a career-high mark today, but he's now thriving for O'Meara and looks the one to be on back at the scene of his recent success.
He has a nice draw in four, can track the leaders from a prominent position and kick on in the straight under Danny Tudhope, who got a nice tune out of him last time.
If it does rain he will cope, but keep an eye on the weather wherever you are betting this afternoon. And if Warwick somehow misses the predicted deluge - get on Goldream!
