Tip Of The Day: Cavalieri - 3.30 Ayr
It's the start of the Galway Festival. Hooray.
Sky Bet have put up a few special bets, largely centred upon Dermot Weld who, despite his annual protestations that he'll be happy to send out just a couple of winners, will send out a dozen or more over the next six days.
He reportedly rated Postulation and Call Vinnie as being among his best chances of the week, and both run today. If the bookmakers can get either turned over, it will be a good start to the week as far as they are concerned.
Postulation has a couple of lengths to make up on Jamaica in his race, the claregalwayhotel.ie EBF Maiden, but I can see him doing just that and could almost fancy him at around the 7/4 mark.
But I'm not sufficiently confident in my knowledge of the Irish formbook to go too far from home, so I'll stick with Ayr and in-form trainer Phil Kirby, whose Cavalieri looks a fair bet in the Download The BetVictor Spincast App Handicap.
He has been a bit disappointing since coming from off the pace to win a fast-run contest at Catterick at the start of the season, a race that for me was particularly memorable as I watched it in a betting shop and saw a man attempt to headbutt a television screen after the race. I don't think he was on the winner.
The problem for Cavalieri is that he does take a keen hold in his races if the pace isn't fast enough, but I'm hoping Joe Fanning will take up a pacesetting role on Mambo Rhythm from the outset, and I'm also hoping that Phil 'iron hands' Makin proves a little stronger than his most recent riders and is able to anchor him and conserve the horse's energy for later in the race.
Frankly, it is a bet with plenty of of risk, because there is no guarantee of pace. But his price compensates more than adequately for that because there are plenty of positives too. He represents a stable sending out plenty of winners, should appreciate this step back up in trip, and remains far from fully-exposed since moving yards.
