Messi now has two goals in the tournament and is part of a congested race to finish as the top goalscorer.

Sky Bet's 11/4 market leader Thomas Muller of Germany has three goals and is joined on that tally by France striker Karim Benzema (7/2 with Sky Bet and Paddy Power but favourite with other firms), Holland winger Arjen Robben (11/1, Boylesports), Dutch hotshot Robin van Persie (10/1, BetVictor and Paddy Power) and surprise Ecuador contender Enner Valencia at 60/1 with 888sport.

Just one goal behind alongside Messi sit Brazil forward Neymar (15/2, youwin), Uruguay's two-goal hero against England Luis Suarez (25/1, betway) and Croatia's Mario Mandzukic (60/1, 888sport) as players who could also contend for the prize.

Argentina confirmed their place in the last 16 by beating Iran and Messi's men are 4/1 to win the World Cup.

Nigeria are expected to join Argentina in making it out of Group F after defeating Bosnia 1-0.

The Super Eagles are 1/20 with Sky Bet to reach the last 16 with a draw against Argentina guaranteeing progression, while Iran (15/2) need to beat Bosnia to have a chance.

Germany still have work to do if they are to progress from Group G following the 2-2 draw with Ghana.

BetVictor and Stan James expect Joachim Low's side to complete the job and make them 4/1 in the outright betting.

Hosts Brazil continue as the 7/2 market leaders with Paddy Power and Stan James.
