Mario Balotelli's second half header secured the win for Italy after Daniel Sturridge's equaliser had previously cancelled out a goal from Claudio Marchisio.

The Azzurri are the 1/8 favourites to make it out of Group D and head the betting at 2/5 to top the group.

Group D earlier started with a shock 3-1 win for Costa Rica against Uruguay.

Costa Rica are now 6/4 to progress after starting Saturday at the bottom of the market at 7/1.

Uruguay have drifted out to 4/1 with Paddy Power and William Hill to make it through and they face England next on Thursday in Sao Paulo.

England are priced up at 8/1 to finish on top of Group D but you can get 10/3 with Coral for Roy Hodgson's men to end up at the bottom of the standings.

The Three Lions are 12/1 with Sky Bet to lose all three of their matches in the opening stage.

England have also moved out to 33/1 in Ladbrokes' outright market.

Italy have been cut to 20/1 by Betfred and totesport to lift the trophy.

Balotelli is a mover in the top goalscorer betting after netting against England.

He can be backed at 25/1 with sportingbet in a market still led by Brazil striker Neymar.
