Victorian Number - 2.30 Southwell
It's raining in Yorkshire and it's raining at Epsom, and a quick look at the map suggest it's raining pretty much everywhere else too today. Boo hiss.
Quite a few of the horses that appealed most to me as potential betting mediums wouldn't want the going to get much softer, which has led me to concentrate more than might normally be the case on the two all-weather cards the feature among the six British and Irish meetings today.
Arashi won convincingly enough over course and distance last week to suggest that a penalty might not stop him in the 8.00 at Kempton and I can see Galatian going well at a price half an hour earlier with his stable having started the season in better form than was the case at this time last year.
However it's Southwell where I have plumped for my nap selection as Victorian Number in the opening Newark Festival 2014 Handicap over seven furlongs.
He finished placed in two attempts on Fibresand earlier this year, on the second occasion looking as if a mile just stretched him on a relatively testing surface.
He then had a four-month break before returning with a decent effort at Kempton a fortnight ago, travelling nicely before giving way in the final furlong.
This 0-65 contest looks an ideal opportunity for Victorian Number, as he meets some fairly ordinary opposition, and is ridden by Hayley Turner who is two-from-four when teaming up with Geoff Deacon's gelding.
