It is 11/10 that Clarke is appointed by the Hoops while Malky Mackay is second best in the betting at 7/2.

Keane was odds-on following a gamble on the Republic of Ireland assistant manager, however, has now drifted out to 8/1 with Coral.

"It looks like the gamble on Keane has gone astray but punters are now putting their money behind Steve Clarke to step into Celtic Park,” said Coral’s John Hill.

BetVictor make Clarke their 4/6 favourite to be the Hoops’ next permanent manager while Mackay is a 6/4 chance with former Manchester United man David Moyes a 10/1 chance.

Scottish firm McBookie.com now has its fourth favourite for the job with Clarke 4/6.

Their spokesman Paul Petrie commented: "Keane was as short as 1/16 on Monday morning but at around lunchtime we started seeing money for Steve Clarke at 20/1.

"By the time the Keane announcement was made, Clarke was already the 6/4 second favourite. Money would suggest he is another name on the shortlist."
