SPAVENTO - 3.50 Ayr

I like horses for courses and I like horses that go well at a particular time of year, so when you get a horse for a course at their time of year then two significant boxes have been firmly ticked.

Throw in a bit of 'becoming nicely handicapped' and I think you've got yourself a bet, and with all three ingredients in the mix SPAVENTO looks an appealing wager at Ayr this afternoon.

She's won at Ayr twice, was third in this race two years ago and always reserves her best for the track. Her last win came here last June (four of her six wins have come in May or June) when she was rated just 2lb higher than the mark she races off today.

This is the first time in seven starts she's dropped back into 0-70 company and has run well twice at Redcar off 72 in that period - a reproduction of those efforts alone would see her in the mix.

Lil Sophella was the one lurking down towards the bottom of the weights that could've been a danger but she's a non-runner, so confidence in the selection is increased though we now have to take a shorter price, but 5/1 remains fair.

Thorntoun Lady and True Pleasure are the form horses at the top of the market, but everything is in place for Spavento to return to form and at the prices she is much the most appealing bet of the trio.
