Rookery - 5.25 Yarmouth
Just the one Flat meeting on turf today but it's an interesting little card as Yarmouth stages the second day of their opening 2014 fixture.
The tricky track isn't to everyone's taste but I've had some luck there down the years and find it profitable to stick with certain jockeys, who ride the place especially well.
Frankie Dettori, who partnered the Godolphin great Dubai Millenium to win on his debut here back in '98, knows Yarmouth like the proverbial back of hand and has a very solid chance on Golden Steps for Marco Botti in the Book A Party Great Yarmouth Racecourse Median Auction Maiden Stakes at 4.55.
Ryan Moore enjoyed eight winners from just 31 rides at the course throughout 2013 and has three fairly obvious opportunities, but Silvestre de Sousa is the man I'll be following.
He didn't get close to a winner from two attempts yesterday but I love the way he rides here generally, his ability to grab the bull by the horns at a vital stage in a race often proving pivotal around this circuit.
Lunar Knot lost many lengths at the start on debut at Southwell and, having been nibbled in the market that day, it wouldn't be the greatest shock to see Alan McCabe's filly consign that effort firmly to the past under SDS in the opening Grosvenor Casino At Great Yarmouth Maiden Auction Stakes (4.20).
However, the one that draws me in most is Rookery for Mark Johnston in the competitive Burlington Palm Hotel Handicap (5.25).
The Raven's Pass gelding looks sure to improve with experience and it's encouraging to see him stepped back up in trip after a staying-on effort on his third maiden start at Wolverhampton last month.
An initial mark of 71 is exploitable and he offers plenty of each-way value around the 14/1 mark.
