XCLUSIVE - 2.20 Southwell
The opening race at Southwell this afternoon is a cracking each-way contest with the dead eight and a handful of contenders who don't look up to the task.
Take Silver Fawn. He's a Wolverhampton specialist who switches to the fibresand for the first time here and is on a long losing streak. He looks an unlikely winner.
The same can be said of 11-year-old Elusive Warrior, a horse that has run his last 47 races at Southwell but has won just two of them.
Mists Of Time too, has shown very little in five starts that suggests she's suddenly going to spring up.
So it's the top five that look worth concentrating on, with Auden perhaps going to struggle to have the speed for this assignment and Bapak Pesta a horse that has failed to win here in six attempts.
You'd have to be concerned that Solarmaite has the required stamina and if you draw a line through her, you are left with Hail Promenadar and XCLUSIVE, with the latter appealing as the solid each-way option.
Hail Promenader has a good chance under William Carson, considering how he ran in a claimer here last time. He's not easily dismissed, but he was beaten off a 1lb lower mark the last time he ran here in a handicap and that just tips the balance in favour of Xclusive.
Ron Harris' four-year-old won by eight lengths at Southwell in a maiden in January, comfortably seeing off his six rivals.
He couldn't follow up in a bigger field handicap next time but has run well the last twice at Kempton, efforts that suggest he can strike off this handicap mark when things are in his favour.
The combination of the return to Southwell, first-time cheekpieces and the efforts of regular pilot Luke Morris could well do the trick.
