Campbonnais 3.20 Catterick
These 'handicap good things' aren't always worth backing, but at prices around the 9/4 and 5/2 mark Campbonnais certainly is in the Watt Fences Handicap Hurdle at Catterick this afternoon.
Rated as high as 132 over fences in Ireland, the former Charles Byrnes and Shark Hanlon-trained horse lost his way in that sphere over the last year or two, but seemed revitalised by the switch to Ali Brewer's when easily winning a handicap hurdle at Fakenham eight days ago.
That came in heavy ground over two and a half miles, so conditions today hold no fears with the step up to three of little concern seeing as he's won and run well over the distance before.
Running off a mark of 100 at Fakenham, it's hard not to come to the conclusion that he looks a very well-handicapped horse when watching the video replay and the handicapper agrees, as he's raised him 11lb for that success to a mark of 111.
However, he races off 100 again today as that was a conditional jockeys' race, so he escapes a penalty, and, while he is undoubtedly well-handicapped, several of his rivals are definitely not.
Moscow Presents, Pudsey House and Hartforth have gone up significantly for winning, Romany Ryme and American Life have gone up significantly for losing, Duke Of Monmouth is badly out of form and Alderley Rover could not cope with his second quick run after a long break up 6lb.
Big Sound is the main danger to the selection, as he bounced back to form in similar conditions at Wetherby last time and races off the same mark today.
However, he looks like he might've run into one in the shape of Campbonnais, who can justify the handicapper's assessment of his Fakenham success with his second victory in eight days this afternoon.
