Samstown should relish the endurance test at Wincanton on Thursday, according to our Anita Chambers.

Malcolm Jefferson: Can win with Firth Of The Clyde
Malcolm Jefferson: Can win with Firth Of The Clyde

Samstown should relish the endurance test of the Higos Insurance Services Somerset National Handicap Chase at Wincanton.

The seven-year-old appears just the type for events such as this three-mile-three-furlong marathon, with his best results coming when the ground is testing and the trip is at the extreme end of the scale.

Indeed, three miles at Haydock was perhaps a touch on the short side for him when fourth last month, although he may also have been feeling the effects of a hard-fought victory at Market Rasen just two weeks before.

Samstown has had a bit of time to get over those two outings now and Alistair Whillans has found him a good opportunity off a reasonable weight with conditions in his favour.

Mic's Delight is well treated on his old form and is the choice in the Higos Insurance Services Platinum Handicap Chase.

The 10-year-old was rated as highly as 135 in 2012 but has slipped to a mark some 15lb lower after an indifferent campaign last year.

However, he showed a glimmer of his old ability when chasing home a decent yardstick in Theatrical Star last time and could go well again off his current rating.

Firth Of The Clyde can strike for Malcolm Jefferson in the Rum 'N' Rasen Handicap Chase at Market Rasen.

He had to work hard to beat Tahiti Pearl at Wetherby back in November but that was only his second start over fences and he was lining up against some experienced rivals.

He is surely learning a little more with each outing and can put his schooling to good use here.

Philip Hobbs has had his string in particularly good form since the turn of the year, making Mountain King of genuine interest in the Ludlow For Functions Novices' Hurdle at the Shropshire circuit.

The five-year-old was ultimately well beaten in a Killarney bumper in May last year, but Hobbs snapped him up during the summer and it has already proved a wise investment.

Mountain King was a hot favourite to making a winning debut for his new connections at Warwick in early December and did so with a degree of comfort.

If he handles these more testing conditions, he should be tough to beat on his hurdling bow.

Doldrums can get back on track with victory in the Coral App Download From The App Store Handicap at Wolverhampton.

The four-year-old is a half-sister to a Grade One winner in America but she has been far less prolific and took her time in getting to the track before eventually making her debut at Wolverhampton last November.

Mark Johnston's patience paid dividends that day as Doldrums came home a cosy scorer, beating a couple of horses that have subsequently gone on to win themselves.

Doldrums did not enjoy such an instant impact on her first handicap start, however, struggling off a mark of 76 when stepped up slightly in trip and being swamped by more experienced rivals.

A switch up to 12 furlongs last time clearly did not play to her strengths as she failed to see out the distance but dropped to a mark of 72 now and back over a shorter trip, Johnston's inmate could find conditions more to her liking.

Dodina can end a lengthy wait for her second career success in the 32Red Fillies' Handicap.

Previously trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam, the four-year-old was a winner at Yarmouth last July but after failing to strike again before the close of the Flat season, she was sold at the Tattersalls autumn sales.

Snapped up by Brian Ellison for 9,000 guineas, Dodina did not make a promising start for new connections when a beaten favourite on her debut over seven furlongs.

Dropped back to six on her most recent outing, though, Dodina made a much more favourable impression in finishing third and stays on a very workable rating of 69.

Matraash should be back in the money in the Coral Mobile "Just Three Clicks To Bet" Selling Stakes after a slightly disappointing effort last time.
