Tip of the Day: Grey Mirage 7.00 Kempton
Has the extra money invested into certain races in the all-weather programme worked? Yes, it produced a couple of really top-drawer handicaps at Lingfield and Kempton yesterday featuring established performers.
Has the extra money invested into certain races in the all-weather programme worked? No, it's produced racecards where the dichotomy between the haves and have-nots is almost absurd - for example, one race worth £37,350 to the winner at Kempton on the same card as four races worth £1,940 to the winner.
The tasty incentive of £19,000 in prize money has produced another decent field for the Download The BetVictor App Now Conditions Stakes at 1900 this evening.
But likeable as the likes of Mont Ras, Bravo Echo and Verse Of Love may be (multiple winners, all of them), I strongly fancy an on-song Grey Mirage to get the better of them all this evening and I'm surprised to see him on offer at a shade of odds-against.
He produced two fair efforts on turf during the year, but never really looked as effective as on Polytrack and was given a mid-season break while the likes of Mont Ras and Bravo Echo were slogging it out in the summer that looks to have done him the power of good.
Grey Mirage's task was made considerably easier when favourite I'm Back was withdrawn at the start last time out, but nevertheless he comfortably put an in-form Magic City (rated 100 on turf form) in his place by six lengths, racing enthusiastically from the front before being pushed clear in the final stages.
He doesn't have to lead, which is probably a good job as most of his main rivals have shown a preference for being ridden handily in recent starts.
But the balance of his form, for example an impressive course-and-distance win of a competitive handicap off 89 back in April (since when he may well have improved again) suggests that he can come out on top this evening.
