I love this time of year. The Flat action is reaching fever pitch, the jump stars are beginning to limber up for the battles ahead. Arc weekend, Champions Day, the Breeders' Cup, Cheltenham's opening meeting - the Open Meeting itself at Prestbury Park. No. It's a good period to be a racing man or woman.
But there's no time to wallow in the satisfaction of the calendar this great game provides - we need a winner this afternoon. Night Song it's over to you in the 00,000 Tattersalls Millions 2YO Fillies' Trophy.
The daughter of Oasis Dream is in the best of hands and John Gosden has taken a patient approach in her first season on the track.
She didn't see the racecourse until the second week of August but showed a smart turn of foot to win a newcomers race at the July Course.
Improvement was assured - and duly arrived next time in a conditions race at Kempton. She again shaped with abundant promise when chasing home subsequent Fillies' Mile disappointment Sound Reflection. She was learning all the time under William Buick who didn't knock her about when it became clear the leader was not for catching.
We'll see a wiser, more battle hardened Night Song this afternoon and she can prove too good for Wedding Ring and Oxsana, who fought out the finish to a similar contest here last time. There won't be much between that pair again.
There may be 14 runners here but it's a contest lacking in depth and the softly-soft approach with the selection is set to be rewarded with a bumper pay day.
