Andre Villas-Boas has been busy strengthening his squad and announced the arrival of two new signings - Roma midfielder Erik Lamela and Steaua Bucharest defender Vlad Chiriches - on the day that saw his side pitched into a group that will see them travel to Russia to face Anzhi Makhachkala plus Sheriff Tiraspol in Moldova and Tromso in Norway.
From a high of 12/1 in the morning, the Lilywhites settled at 10/1 with Ladbrokes and Coral for the tournament and bookmakers are expecting Group K to pose little in the way of problems with the 8/13 chalked up by William Hill the top price to lead their mini-league.
While they are the current trophy favourites, it should be remembered that eight teams will 'parachute' into the competition from the Champions League after Christmas. Last season two such teams, Chelsea and Benfica, went on to reach the final.
Swansea (40/1, general) and Wigan (200/1, Boylesports) will also face trips to Russia in Groups A and D.
Swansea have a tough-looking group featuring Spanish side Valencia, Russian side Kuban Krasnodar and St Gallen of Switzerland and the layers make them 3/1 shots (bwin), with Valencia widely odds-on but even money with Ladbrokes.
FA Cup winners Wigan, now in the Championship, will go to Rubin Kazan, Maribor of Slovenia and Zulte Waregem in Belgium and are 8/1 with Ladbrokes to spring a surprise, with Rubin Kazan the 4/5 (BetVictor) favourites.
Tournament second favourites (17/1, 888sport, unibet) Fiorentina (17/1, 888sport, unibet) are 8/13 shots to head Group E while Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven - who were as big as 50/1 prior to the draw - are just 22/1 to lift the trophy having been pitched into Group B which they are 11/17 favourites (888sport, unibet) to top.
