I don't envy the task of those who have to provide betting forecasts. With the advent of exchanges their hard work can be a source of ridicule very quickly but even so my head was in a spin over today's fancy - Strategical in the opening Orelans Nursery Handicap at Sandown.
The Press Association, who provide our own forecast, put him in at a defensive 10/11, the Racing Post 3/1. Where would the pin land?
Well sadly closer to the PA mark but I still think there's plenty to like about the 7/4 chance this afternoon.
He has been odds-on for all three career starts and won the last two at Yarmouth (1/4) and Wolverhampton (1/20). As the odds suggest he hasn't beaten much but he's a fine, imposing physical specimen and we are nowhere near the limit of his potential.
The stiff five furlongs here promises to suit and Charlie Appleby's charge who is taken to stay on late in the day and pick off Foxy Clarets for the red-hot Richard Fahey team. He's nine pounds well in on official figures after a career best in a valuable sales race at York last week but form from those races is notoriously untrustworthy.
He'd be fairly treated - but no more - on previous form and lacks the potential for improvement of the selection.
Mahlah needs to bounce back from a couple of below-par efforts but his presence does put pace to the race and that is very much in favour of the Mickael Barzalona and Strategical, who are confident selections.
