Every punter has a hard-luck story or two to tell. I know I do. But even I had to feel for the chap who contacted Sportinglife.com last week to tell us about his misfortune on Norwegian Derby Day at Ovrevoll.
Fancying there might be a decent pot in the state-run V64 jackpot, our correspondent staked around £40. However in the fourth race, there was confusion when the judge called the wrong horse the winner.
He subsequently altered the result, saying that 'the sun had been in his eyes', but it was too late for betting purposes as the bet had been settled in favour of the original 'winner'.
The mix-up cost our man the entire pool of about NOK100,000 - a little more than £10,000 - as nobody else had correctly selected the six winners. What a game. Sir, you have my sympathy.
Richard Fahey enjoyed no luck at York's Ebor meeting last week, drawing a blank at a track where his runners usualy excel.
However with nine winners from his 19 runners on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week there's clearly no hangover at the stable and normal service has quickly resumed.
Size has already supplied Fahey with three wins this season but he raced too freely at York last time and was hampered before dropping back quickly close home.
However, he's had seven weeks off and returns in an easier-looking event over a furlong-shorter trip that might just suit.
I think he's quite an appealing bet today, although his somewhat in-and-out profile means he will make more appeal to win-only punters than those who like an each-way dabble.
