Selection: Triple Eight 4.20 Beverley
Phil Kirby is operating at a 21% strike rate on the Flat this season and has had four winners from his last five runners, including today's selection Triple Eight.
The five-year-old is bidding to make it two wins in a row at Beverley and clearly gets on with jockey Michael O'Connell. The Royal Applause gelding forged clear in the final furlong at Ripon last time out, eventually scoring by five lengths and is expected to complete a quick-fire double today.
Racing under a 6lb penalty today essentially sees Triple Eight 3lb well in and he should be able to remain competitive off his adjusted mark having finished in the first three on five of his six starts this season.
Whilst Triple Eight appreciated the cut in the ground at Ripon, he is equally effective on a quicker surface with two of his three career wins coming on Good to Firm ground, meaning today's faster conditions shouldn't be a problem for the gelding.
The biggest danger to the selection could be the Dandy Nicholls-trained Be Perfect; the Street Cry gelding is still looking for his first success in Britain having been a useful performer in France.
The four-year-old is now racing off a mark of 85 and the drop to a class 4 handicap entitles him to go close, especially if he can reproduce the type of performance when he was third at Ripon three runs ago.
But the selection is Triple Eight, Kirby's string are absolutely flying at the moment and his five-year-old can continue his fine form at a track where his trainer is operating at a 16% strike rate.
