Bennys Mist: 3.50 Newbury
It's an old maxim and one that occasionally bears fruit but the field for this three mile handicap at the Berkshire venue are so tightly matched that they could easily change positions in the market by post time.
The current favourite, and selection, is Bennys Mist who is taken to provide Venetia Williams with another winner in a terrific season.
Already successful twice over fences during this campaign, he has failed to complete the last twice, failing to cope with a rise in class and drop in trip at Cheltenham (in very testing ground) before falling when mounting a challenge in a 14 runner handicap at this track.
This small field will allow him a good sight of his fences while it's worth noting that his four career wins have all come in single figure line-ups.
The heavy ground holds no fears and he still looks feasibly handicapped.
African Broadway is his nearest challenger in the market and returns from a break. His latest effort can probably be upgraded a little as it was by no means a bad run behind two progressive performers but his profile is a little hit and miss and there's a suspicion that he won't live up to early expectations.
Red Rouble represents a yard enjoying a fine month and his last run was more encouraging after pulling up on his two previous starts but he's won only once in 15 starts over the larger obstacles and lacks the scope of his rivals.
There is a chance that the fall may have shaken the confidence of Bennys Mist but, even if that is the case, this race looks to be an ideal contest to repair any damage and resume winning ways.
