The former Chelsea boss, currently at Real Madrid, is expected to make a return to the club where he won two Premier League titles, according to many layers.

bet365, however, were offering 11/8 about Mourinho becoming the new Chelsea boss on Thursday evening.

Sky Bet's Chris Spicer, whose firm went 4/5, said: "Our punters are backing Benitez to be gone before the end of the season so, if Mourinho is Roman Abramovich's man, another interim manager could well be on the cards.

"That could lead to somebody like Avram Grant (16/1) getting the post again, while the Blues' place in next season's Champions League far from assured."

If having bet it will be worth checking whether any interim manager will be result in the bet being settled as firms have different rules.

Everton manager David Moyes is next in the market if you take best price as the guide - he's 9/1 with Stan James but just 3s with bet365.

Paddy Power bet on who will be in charge of the Blues on the first day of next season and go 5/4 Mourinho, 13/2 Moyes. Benitez is 8/1 to still be at the helm with Ladbrokes.

However, most firms expect the Spaniard to be gone before the end of this season.

Stan James make him just 1/3 to be gone before the final day after Wednesday night's rant against the club's fans and the decision to appoint him 'interim manager'. Ladbrokes will give you 4/6.

It's 2/1 (Stan James) that Benitez sees out the current campaign.

By Thursday evening Benitez was no better than 1/2 (Sky Bet) to be the next Premier League manager to leave his post.

Several firms also bet on Mourinho's next job. Chelsea is a 4/5 shot at Stan James but sportingbet offer 7/4 - the same price as Manchester City are to secure his services after he leaves Real Madrid.

It is widely expected Mourinho will quit the Bernabeu in the summer.
