JOHNSON RELISHES UNDERDOG ROLE
By Ian Gordon, PA Sport
Long jumper Jade Johnson is happy in the role of underdog heading into
Saturday's World Championship final in Paris.
The Londoner remembers she was in a similar position last year when she came
away with silver medals at the Commonwealth Games and European Championships.
"I will be the little underdog going into the final," said Johnson, who
qualified at the Stade de France with a second round effort that left her fifth
overall.
"I am just looking to make the top eight and get a personal best, if I do
that I will be happy. But anything is possible now.
"Eunice Barber will have huge home support and she is jumping well, but
hopefully she will be tired from the heptathlon.
"I have had a nightmare year but hopefully I can put it all behind me now.
"I was really pleased with my jump in qualifying and took the third jump just
to get a feel for the stadium before coming back for the final."
Johnson will compete while still taking antibiotics for a kidney problem that
she is growing tired of.
"I will be on antibiotics until the end of the season but then we have got to
get this thing sorted out," added Johnson.
"If you have got an injury you can deal with that, but with this kidney
problem you don't know when it's going to reappear which makes it really
difficult. Thankfully there is the rest day before the final."
