CAMPBELL ON TRACK FOR MEDAL DOUBLE
By Neil Silver, PA Sport, Paris
Darren Campbell is on course for a medal double after he qualified comfortably
for Friday night's 200 metres final.
The 29-year-old followed Monday night's bronze in the 100 metres of these
World Championships by producing a season's best time of 20.34 seconds as he
finished a comfortable third in his semi-final at the Stade de France.
Campbell was racing in the second of the two heats and ran a powerful home
straight before easing up on the line to finish behind American winner John
Capel and the impressive Japanese sprinter Shingo Suetsugu.
However, Campbell will be Britain's sole representative in the 200m final as
team-mate Christian Malcolm narrowly failed to qualify from the other semi.
Drawn in the difficult lane one against a strong field, Malcolm finished fifth
in a time of 20.43 - but only the first four made it through.
Malcolm remained defiant despite failing to make the final of the 200 metres.
He said: "I still believe I have got what it takes to be a major championship
sprinter.
"I knew it would be hard from lane one but I still thought I was capable of
finishing in the top four.
"After the early rounds I hoped I would find some kind of speed but I just
did not have anything in my legs."
