Britain's Chris Tomlinson will go for gold at the World Championships on
Friday night - having originally planned a sight-seeing tour of Paris instead!
The 6ft 6in Middlesborough beanpole was certain that an injury-dogged summer
would see him miss out on a place in the long jump final.
But Tomlinson catapulted himself into medal contention after soaring out to a
season's best 8.16 metres with his first jump at the Stade de France on Wednesday night.
"That was my best jump for 15 months," said Tomlinson. "But it means I'm in
the final and I had planned sight-seeing in this great city on Friday.
"I was ranked 31 out of 38 this year and a few weeks ago I didn't think I
would be at these championships, let along make the final."
Tomlinson, who finally broke Lynn Davies' 34-year-old British record last
summer with a massive leap of 8.27m, injured his hamstring just over a month ago
and has only had a couple of weeks training.
But he became the first British male to qualify for a world long jump final
with his qualifying round effort that left him second overall having gone into
the event with a season's best of 7.91m.
"I just went out there and things came together," added the 21-year-old. "I
have been injured and have tried to compete with injury which is so hard.
"People don't know what has been going on injury wise behind the scenes, but
touch wood they are behind me now. I have managed to have two weeks really good
training."
Team-mate Nathan Morgan, who got within one centimetre of Tomlinson's record
last month, will not be joining him after he injured his foot with his second
round jump and had to undergo X-rays.
Though it is the injury to four-time world champion Ivan Pedroso, which ended
the Cuban's reign, which will boost Tomlinson's medal chances.
