Hot favourite Blanka Vlasic earned the Balkan nations their only medal of the championships when she won the women's high jump event.
The 6-4, 23-year old from Croatia cleared 2.05m as five women sailed over 2.00m for the first time in athletics history.
Russia's Anna Chicherova and Antoinetta Di Martino of Italy set a personal best and a new national record respectively to share the silver medal.
"I'm just relieved, I wanted it so bad," said Vlasic. "Now I'm in a state of shock, I don't realise."
"I was the favourite, so had to deal with a lot of pressure," she added. "It was not easy to beat them."
