Javelin gold medalist Tero Pitkamaki made amends for failing to make the podium when number one in the world two years ago on home territory in Finland.
Pitkamaki, fourth in Helsinki, took the lead with a throw of 89.16 metres then unleashing a mighty 90.33m to claim the gold ahead of Andreas Thorkildsen and Breaux Greer.
Norway's Thorkildsen, the Olympic champion, was runner-up for a second successive time, his best effort of 88.61m also coming in round three.
"The party at home in Finland will be pretty big," said the new champion.
"That was my dream, to win the gold medal. Our team did not win a medal here until today so in javelin was the last chance."
