Britain's Michael Rimmer's brave attempt to reach the 800m final ended in failure in Osaka.
Rimmer, in the third semi-final, went to the front from the gun and was still in charge off the home turn.
But he tired badly up the straight and eventually finished well out of contention as his championship came to an end.
The Liverpuddlian, who admitted following his heat that he would need to set a lifetime best to advance, stormed out of the blocks and led by a comfortably 10m at the bell.
But the UK champion, sporting his lucky T-shirt under his racing vest, was unable to maintain the pace and after leading through 500m, he was caught heading into the home straight and finished sixth in 1 minute 47.39secs.
"I spoke to my coach and he told me I would have to go off quick, I couldn't do what I did yesterday and claw them back, I had to be there from the gun," said the 21-year-old.
"I went off hard, not as hard as I would have liked to but at my own pace, and found myself in the lead. I wasn't aware of the gap behind me. If I knew about it I might have took it a little bit easier down the back straight.
"I am not a natural front runner, I prefer to sit and kick."
