Marion Jones collected her second gold medal in as many days when she
anchored the United States to victory in the women's 4x100m relay.
Jones, who had not attended the American relay camp or run in the first
round, showed Britain's men how to make a final baton change as she romped
home with metres to spare.
USA won in a time of 41.71 with Germany winning silver in 42.32. France
pipped Jamaica by one hundreth of a second to take bronze.
Great Britain, who had done well to make the final, finished a respectible
sixth. The team of Marcia Richardson, Sarah Wilhelmy, Vernicha James and Abi
Oyeptian clocked a time of 42.60, just outside the national record.
Afterwards Jones and her team-mates - Kelli White, Chryste Gaines and Inger
Miller - admitted their changeovers had been near perfect.
Miller said: "It's the first time we've had passes that good."
Jones added: "I'm just incredibly excited to be part of this squad who won
gold today.
"The US has been historically dominant in the 4x100m relay but the past few
years things haven't gone our way.
"It's definitely satisfaction to come back here in North America in Edmonton
and get the gold."
Asked to sum up a championships which has seen her win two golds and a
silver after defeat in the 100m, Jones said: "I learnt a lot about my
technique in the 100 and how it needs to be improved.
"I came here to walk away with three golds but it didn't happen. I have to
deal with that."
