Pedroso - another gold medal (Allsport)
PERFECT PEDROSO ON GOLD TRAIL
Cuban Ivan Pedrosa won an historic fourth consecutive world long jump title
in Edmonton on Saturday.
Pedroso's winning leap of 8.40m earned him yet another gold medal, his run
starting back in 1995.
The 28-year-old took an early lead in the second round with 8.23m. American
Savante Stringfellow, who had started poorly with two fouls, then jumped
8.22 to put Pedroso under pressure.
However, he responded perfectly, increasing his lead with a third-round jump
of 8.35m.
And although Stringfellow moved closer again with an 8.24 effort in round
four, Pedroso ensured himself of the title with his best jump in the fifth
round.
The battle for bronze was very tight.
Portugal's Carlos Calado and American Miguel Pate both managed 8.21, but the
Portuguese took the medal as his second-best jump was further – 8.18
compared to 8.09.
Of his achievement, Pedroso said: “Winning every two years does take hard
work. It takes hard work to accomplish what I've accomplished. What keeps me
going is all the other titles I can accomplish, more world titles and more
world recognition that I can achieve.
“This is the first good result for me this season and it came at the right
place.”
