Allen Johnson regained the world 110m hurdles crown which had been left vacant
by Britain's Colin Jackson as he inflicted a defeat on Olympic champion Anier
Garcia.
The American, who won the title in 1995 and 1997 but failed to start his
semi-final two years ago through injury, clocked the fastest time in the world
this year to win in 13.04secs.
Cuba's Garcia - second in the worlds in Seville in 1999 to Jackson - had to
settle for silver again in 13.07 with Haiti's Dudley Dorival winning the bronze
in 13.25.
``It is great to be back on top of the world,'' said Johnson. who clattered
several hurdles. ``It was tough because Anier is a good hurdler. He almost got
me but I just managed to hold him off.''
Johnson made the best start as Garcia's legs seemed to buckle under his
frame.
The American led over the first hurdle and despite him hitting hurdles
mid-race Garcia was unable to catch up.
The Cuban was closing in on his rival towards the finish but he clipped the
last hurdle and ended just short in the dip for the line.
Johnson said: "It was not the perfect race, but I got the job done.
"At the finish Garcia was coming onto me strong. I was really worried that I
might lose the title."
Garcia admitted he lost the race at the start.
"If there had been a faster start, it would have made all the difference.
"I'm still an elite athlete and I know that I am in better shape than my
opponents. In this race you have to guess the start and today I just
couldn't do it."
