May - leaps to world championship glory (Allsport)
MAY DAY FOR FLYING FIONA
Fiona May, born in Slough but competing for Italy, regained her world long jump
title by the narrowest of margins in a thrilling competition.
The 32-year-old - who defected to Italy in 1994 because she was unhappy with
the support she received in Britain - clinched gold with a leap of 7.02m.
That was just one centimetre better than in-form Russian Tatyana Kotova, who
had to settle for the silver.
May won the world title six years ago, and finished third and second in the
last two World Championships. But she went one better this time and danced
around the track in joyous celebration at the end of the competition.
