Gebrselassie - hampered by injury lately (Allsport)
HUTCHINGS ON THE MEN'S 10,000m
By Tim Hutchings
In the 10,000m, Haile Gebrselassie is the defending champion but has had an awful lot of injuries this winter and until a few weeks ago we were unsure if he would even defend his title.
But he will be there in Edmonton but he has got very limited training behind and whether he will be the irresistible force of old remains to be seen.
Look out for the Kenyans, Charles Kamathi, John Koria and Paul Kosgei, they all ran very fast times at altitude at Nairobi a few weeks ago in their national championship and if those times are transferred to sea level or the low level of Edmonton, they could take chunks off it.
They are probably the favourites and one of them may well be helped to the gold medal.
One to look out for is the American Keflezighi, a former Moroccan, who ran 27mins 13 in June and the Americans love their distance running.
Behind Gebrsleassie, for the Ethiopians there is Mezegebu who won a few weeks ago and the virtaully unknown Yibeltal Admassu, who has only just broken 28 minutes but the Ethiopians would not be sending him to the championship if they didn't think he had a good chances of getting in the top six and he's my dark horse.
I feel this might be one race too far for Gebrselassie with all his injury problems and I think the winner will be in a Kenyan vest.
