Chambers - a definite medal contender (Allsport)
HUTCHINGS ON THE MEN'S 100m
By Tim Hutchings, Sportinglife.com
The men's 100m is the Blue Riband event of any championship.
And Maurice Greene has totally dominated the event for the last three or four years.
He is world record holder, world champion, Olmypic champion and has six of the 10 top times this year.
He recently ran 9.98 into a headwind at Crystal Palace - breaking the 10-second barrier is a real indicator of class.
He beat Dwain Chambers, the 23-year-old pretender to his throne from Great Britain.
But Chambers has a great championship record and I believe he will get a medal but I predict Maurice Greene will win.
The man to watch is possible Tim Montgomery, the fastest man in the world this year and the American champion in Greene's absence.
Montgomery ran 9.84 at Oslo a month ago and that makes him the second fastest man ever.
Montgomery had a two-second per metre wind behind him in Oslo and Greene would have run faster than his 9.79 world record if he had that wind behind.
Others to watch out for include Ato Boldon, a training partner of Greene and a former world 200m champion but his form has been inconsistent this year and I would discount him.
My winning order would be Greene, Chambers and Montgomery but also watch out for Bernard Williams of the American team.
