CLOETE HITS THE BIG TIME

South African Hestrie Cloete took gold in the women's high jump on countback
from defending champion Inha Babakova.
Bot jumpers cleared 2.00m but three failures by the Ukrainian as opposed to
just one by Cloete ensured the 22-year-old took the title.
Sweden's Kajsa Bergqvist, who cleared 1.97, took bronze.
Cloete, who has an unusual two-hand lead action, said she had learnt from
her disappointment of two years ago when she had expected to win a medal in
Seville.
"You've got to go into a final and fight for a medal. There are 12 other
jumpers who really want a medal. Last time I was thinking about the final
before I qualified. I think that was the problem."
Babakova said a strong headwind had hindered her chances.
"It was blowing in my face and I had difficulties with my technique.
"But I
am very pleased with second and not a bit disappointed."
