As expected, the USA stormed to victory in the men's 4x100m relay, winning
by around 10m from runners-up South Africa.
The American team of Mickey Grimes, Bernard Williams, Dennis Mitchell and
Tim Montgomery won in a time of 37.96.
South Africa took silver in 38.47 with Ato Boldon's Trinidad third in 38.58,
For the Americans it had been a case of dicing with death on the way to the
final.
In the first round they were disqualified and then reinstated after
Jon Drummond ran outside of his lane and then earlier on Sunday they almost
missed their final baton change in the semi-final.
Mitchell said it was an emotional way to end his career.
"This is my goodbye and it's difficult to do. I've had agood career, it's
nice to leave on top.
"When I handed the stick off to Tim there were a lot of emotions that I
cannot describe. I was happy and I cried."
