REPRIEVE FOR US RELAY STARS
The United States sprint relay team is aiming to make the most of its second
chance on Sunday by claiming gold.
The men's team was reinstated on Saturday after initially being disqualified
when Jon Drummond stepped on the inside line of his lane after cramping in
is right leg caused him to jolt suddenly.
Courageously Drummond kept running and the US managed to win their heat.
A protest by the British team – who were later eliminated themselves –
followed and saw the Americans temporarily removed from the event.
But after a counter protest the jury of appeal reinstated the US.
A statement read: “The jury, having reviewed the evidence and the
circumstances surrounding the occurrence, and in the spirit of fair play,
determines that the USA team should be reinstated.”
US head coach Orin Ritchburg expressed relief at the decision.
He said: “We're happy we'll be able to come back and go after that gold
medal.
“Jon gave everything he could to keep us in that race. He's the best
lead-off man in the business and he did a great job. It's too bad that we
were up in the air there for a while, but we're glad we're in.”
Drummond added: “I just know I did all I could do. From my drive to
acceleration phase, it felt like someone pinched my leg. Two steps later it
felt like someone punched me.
“Then I buckled. After I felt myself buckle, I took one wide step to get to
the middle of the lane.”
Drummond is not expected to fit be for Sunday's semi-final and the US
line-up is likely to be Mickey Grimes, Bernard Williams, Dennis Mitchell and
individual silver medallist Tim Montgomery.
The US, who are also without world champion Maurice Greene through injury,
will be hoping to emulate the women's sprint relay team who have already won
gold at these championships.
